Dental Hygiene Community Activities

The DCC Dental Hygiene students provided a Fluoride Varnish Clinic for all infants and toddlers at the Family First Childcare facility and the DRMC facility on April 8th in celebration of The Week of the Young Child. One infant and 18 toddlers were seen. To make the children feel more secure and to provide better vision for the provider, the students did a knee to knee position with the parent. The students examined the children's mouth with a mirror. Some of the children had "white spots" on their teeth. This indicates that some of the teeth with white spots are prone to tooth decay. The application of varnish was put on the teeth.  Fluoride varnish helps remineralize the teeth to protect from decay. Oral health education was discussed with the parent.

A gift bag consisting of a brush for the parent and the child, toothpaste and instructions about what to do after the varnish is put on the teeth.

This was a great experience for our students to use what they have learned and for the parents and children to gain valuable information. Our faculty and staff have children that stay at the center. We enjoyed being able to collaborate with Family First Childcare Center.
