Danville Community College Hosts VCCS Poetry and Art Competition Celebrating the Theme "I Belong"

Danville Community College (DCC) is proud to announce the launch of its Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Poetry and Art Competition, providing a platform for DCC students to express their creativity and share their interpretations of the theme, "I Belong." The competition, led by Dr. Anca Garcia, assistant professor of English, aims to foster a sense of belonging and unity within the DCC community and across the VCCS.

 

In addition, first-place winners from all 23 colleges will advance to compete for the statewide titles of Poet Laureate and Visual Arts Luminary This adds an extra layer of excitement and recognition for the talented student participants.

 

The deadline for submissions is February 10, 2024. The competition winners will be revealed during a ceremony on February 23, 2024, in Temple 110 on the DCC Campus. This event promises to be an inspiring showcase of the diverse talents present among DCC students.

 

Dr. Anca Garcia, who spearheads this initiative, expressed her enthusiasm for the competition, stating, "The 'I Belong' theme provides a powerful canvas for our students to explore and communicate their unique perspectives. This competition is not just about artistic expression; it's about building connections and creating a sense of belonging within our college community."

 

Dr. Paul Fox, Dean of Arts, Sciences, and Business at DCC, commended the initiative, saying, "Art and poetry have the ability to transcend boundaries and create a shared understanding. We are excited to see how our students interpret and represent the theme through their creative works."

 

Dr. Cornelius Johnson, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services, highlighted the significance of such events in the overall college experience, stating, "This competition aligns with our commitment to providing holistic education. It encourages students to explore their identity and connection to the community, fostering personal and academic growth."

 

"We are not only celebrating the creativity within our local community but also contributing to a larger, statewide celebration of artistic expression," mentioned Dr.Garcia.

 

The DCC Poetry and Art Competition is open to all DCC students, including students in DCC’s dual-enrollment and early college programs, and the college looks forward to witnessing the vibrant and diverse submissions that will undoubtedly reflect the rich tapestry of experiences within the college community.
