Danville Community College (DCC) is proud to announce that Lauren Abigail “Abby” Chism, a student enrolled in the Venture Creation and Business Management program, with a secondary focus on Digital Imaging and Photography, has been awarded the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) Virginia Banking Fellowship and will be sponsored by Atlantic Union Bank for the 2024-2025 program.
This distinguished fellowship, which is a collaborative partnership between the Virginia Bankers Association Education Foundation (VBAEF) and the VFCCE, will not only cover Lauren's final year of studies at DCC in the form of a $7,000 award, but will also provide her with invaluable opportunities to travel, participate in leadership forums, and gain mentorship from successful men and women in the banking industry.
"In its 13th year, the VFCCE Fellows program has prepared and mentored nearly 300 aspiring leaders and helped fulfill critical workforce needs," said Anne Rogers, Director of Community Engagement & CAPS Program Manager for the VFCCE. "We are grateful to work with partners like the VBAEF to support student success."
Lauren, who has been a student at DCC since the fall of 2023, is set to graduate in the upcoming spring. Her journey at DCC has been marked by dedication and passion, making her a standout candidate for this fellowship. She first learned about this opportunity through Brad Prillaman, Coordinator of Academic Advising for DCC, who recognized that it aligned perfectly with her career aspirations.
"This fellowship is a game-changer for me," said Lauren. "It’s not just about the financial support; it’s about the doors it will open. I'll have the chance to learn from people who’ve already built successful businesses, which will help me decide whether to transfer to a four-year institution or jump straight into the business world."
Lauren's story is one of resilience and determination. As a former foster youth, she faced numerous challenges and doubts along the way. Yet, she has continually defied expectations and embraced every opportunity that has come her way.
"For anyone who reads this, I want to say: Go for all the opportunities you can, especially as a young adult," Lauren shared. "Don’t let people discourage you from achieving your dreams. The worst thing that can happen is someone saying no."
DCC is immensely proud of Lauren's achievements and looks forward to witnessing the continued success of this remarkable student.
