DCC Offers Financial Aid Application Support During ‘FAFSA Simplification Act’ Transition

The Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), which traditionally opens in October each year, is experiencing a delay in its release for the 2024-25 academic year. This delay is attributed to the comprehensive overhaul brought about by the FAFSA Simplification Act, impacting the processes and systems used to award financial aid to college students nationwide. Danville Community College (DCC), in anticipation of this change, has planned workshops throughout January 2024 to support students who may need guidance or assistance with their financial aid application.

“The new FAFSA form, scheduled to be released by December 31, 2023, will streamline the application process for students and parents,” said Angela Turner, Director of Financial Aid for DCC.  “Benefits of the FAFSA Simplification include, fewer questions on the application, an overall simplified application process, and expanded Federal PELL Grant eligibility for students.”

The FAFSA Simplification Act aims to simplify the application process, ensuring a more accessible and user-friendly experience for students and their families. As a result, the release date for the FAFSA has been pushed back from October to late December.

To support students during this transition, the TRIO EOC Program and the DCC Financial Aid Office are collaborating to provide FAFSA Workshops in the Wyatt Building, room 214, beginning in January 2024. No appointments are necessary and staff will be available to guide students through the updated FAFSA application process.

“Having attended multiple 2024-25 FAFSA webinars and possessing over 20 years of college access experience, the TRIO EOC staff is trained, knowledgeable, and ready to assist new, stop-outs, transfer, and continuing students with free FAFSA assistance,” said Sharon Harris, TRIO Project Director of Southern Piedmont Educational Opportunity Center. “The 2024-25 FAFSA introduces significant changes, making it crucial for students and parents, if applicable, to accurately report their 2022 Federal tax income and related information.”
