September has been a month filled with developing partnerships, and invaluable conversations for Danville Community College (DCC). Each of these interactions serves to remind me how deeply interconnected our college is with the broader community, from local initiatives to national recognition.
Canine Advice - September 3
On September 3, as I prepared to return to work after the Labor Day break, I received a lighthearted bit of advice from Ace, the official DCC PrezPup, regarding my sock choice. I'm not sure when Ace became so interested in fashion, but I am sure it has nothing to do with he and his sister, Pippa, being featured on this particular pair.
Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) Board Meeting - September 4
I had the privilege of attending the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) Board Meeting in South Boston on September 4. This particular meeting was bittersweet as we celebrated the accomplishments of Dr. Betty Adams, who is transitioning to retirement. Her work with both Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) and DCC has left a lasting legacy. Together with Dr. Johnson of SVCC, we are planning a VCCS-specific celebration to honor her significant contributions to higher education in our region. Dr. Adams’ leadership serves as a reminder of the long-lasting impact one can have when dedicated to student success and community development.
Project Imagine - September 11
One of the highlights of this month was the signing of the Project Imagine Partnership. This initiative represents more than just a collaboration; it is a beacon of hope for our youth and an investment in the future workforce of our community. Our partnerships are key to creating pathways for students who may not have seen college in their future. At DCC, we are committed to ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to succeed.
IperionX - September 13
I had the opportunity to tour the IperionX Titanium facility on September 13 and participate in a round-table discussion with Senator Mark Warner. The discussions were focused on innovation, workforce development, and how local partnerships with industry leaders can propel our region forward. It’s clear that our region is becoming a hub of technological innovation, and DCC plays a crucial role in preparing students for these emerging industries.
DCC Advisory Board Meeting - September 16
The DCC Advisory Board meeting was another occasion to celebrate our progress. Under the leadership of our new chair, Kathryn Roberts of Halifax County, the advisory board has been instrumental in supporting DCC’s initiatives. As we eclipsed 1,500 full-time equivalent (FTE) students for the first time in many years, I am grateful for the unwavering support of our board members. They truly represent the spirit of collaboration between DCC and the localities we serve.
Rural Community College Alliance (RCCA) National Conference - September 18 - 20
Attending the 2024 Rural Community College Alliance (RCCA) National Conference in Queensbury, NY, was both an educational and humbling experience. Engaging with other rural community college leaders, including our own VCCS President John Rainone, allowed us to share best practices and discuss the unique challenges we face. I was honored to receive the 2024 RCCA Rising Star Award, which I view not just as a personal achievement but as a reflection of the dedication of the entire DCC community. Bringing this award back to our college is a testament to the work we are doing to empower our students and strengthen our region.
Uncle Al's Diner Partnership - September 23
On September 23, DCC continued to build upon our valuable partnerships. We solidified a collaboration with Uncle Al’s, a partnership that will bring affordable meal options to our faculty, staff, and students. Thank you to Allen "Uncle Al" Plummer for your willingness to collaborate and partner with us to improve our student experience.
Also on the 23rd, I had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Paula Pando’s impactful speech in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. His words and the cultural celebration underscored the diversity that makes DCC such a vibrant community.
Danville Development Council - September 24
As we hosted the Danville Development Council meeting at DCC, I was filled with optimism for the future. Our discussions were centered on how DCC can play an even more pivotal role in the development and growth of the region. I look forward to sharing more details from this meeting in the near future.
SOVAH Health - September 25
I had the opportunity to meet with Steve Heatherly, Market President of SOVAH Health, and Tory Shepherd, Market Chief Operating Officer of SOVAH Health. Our discussions focused on the healthcare workforce needs in our region and how DCC can expand its collaboration with SOVAH to better meet those needs. Strengthening our healthcare workforce is essential to ensuring that our community remains healthy and resilient.
As September comes to a close, I reflect on the partnerships we’ve built, the milestones we’ve achieved, and the future that lies ahead for DCC. Our work is never done, but with the continued support of our community and partners, I am confident that we are on the right path toward creating a brighter, more prosperous future for all.
