DCC Op-Ed with Dr. Jerry Wallace: Summer 2024 Events in Full Swing at DCC

Summer on the Danville Community College campus is in full swing! Staff members have been enjoying fun activities across campus as we get ready for the start of the 2024 – 2025 Academic Year on August 21. Take a look at some of the work and play that’s has been happening at DCC this summer!

June 10 - Employee Welcome Program

On June 10, the DCC Employee Welcome Committee assembled to create a new program to ensure new hires feel at home when they arrive on campus. Beginning in August, each new DCC Team Member will receive a custom-designed box filled with DCC swag, a t-shirt, and engaging information about our communities.

June 11 - Lt. Governor Meet-and-Greet

It was an honor to welcome the Democratic Nominee for Lt. Governor and Mayor of the City of Richmond Levar Stoney, to Crèma and Vine on June 11 at his campaign meet-and-greet. The event was a wonderful opportunity to discuss the future of our community and share our vision for DCC.

June 22 - DCC Knight at the Ballpark - Otterbots Game

Our DCC Employee Knight at the Ballpark was a night to remember! The camaraderie and excitement in the air were palpable as we cheered on the OtterBots. It’s always a pleasure to see our staff come together outside the workplace for some well-deserved fun.

June 26 - Sundae Funday!

Sundae Funday, organized by our Staff Social Committee, was a sweet success! We enjoyed delicious sundaes, friendly competitions and games, and celebrated the winners with much enthusiasm. These events are crucial in fostering a strong, connected community within our college.

July 13 - 15 - AACC President Academy Summer Institute

I had the privilege of participating in the 2024 President Academy Summer Institute hosted by the American Association of Community Colleges in Washington, DC. This special professional development opportunity brought together community college presidents from across the nation. Allyson and I were proud to represent the Virginia Community College System and Danville Community College.

July 16 - Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Event

On July 16, DCC faculty, staff, and students had the opportunity to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Danville/Pittsylvania County at one of their newest homes and at the ReStore site. Thank you to our faculty, staff, administration, and student representatives for your hard work in serving our community.

July 22 - Supporting Radford University

I was pleased to support Bret Danilowicz and Radford University on July 22 at their Networking Reception event, held at Berry Hill Resort. Danville Community College students deserve intentional transfer pathways to success and we look forward to fruitful, student-centric partnerships!

July 30 - Keynote Speaker, DPS Adult Education Graduation

On July 30, I was honored to serve as the Danville Public Schools Adult Education Graduation Keynote Speaker. These amazing students are embarking on their next steps to success as they transition to universities, the armed forces, community college, and the workforce. Sharing words of inspiration to the future leaders of our community is very important and I appreciate the opportunity to speak to these inspiring students.

August 2 & 3 - 'Suds, Swine, Sippin' and Song' Educational Foundation Fundraiser

Looking ahead, I am excited to attend the annual 'Suds, Swine, Sippin' and Song' fundraiser at the beautiful Motley's Mill Waterfall Estate, hosted by the Danville Community College Educational Foundation. Now a two-day event held on August 2 and 3, the fundraiser features live music, barbecue, bourbon tastings, and more! Money raised from the event will go back into scholarships and programs to help reduce barriers to education for DCC students.

2024 - 2025 Academic Year

As always, I want to thank the community for making the City of Danville and the surrounding area such a wonderful place to work and live. As I begin my third academic year at DCC, I see how far we have come in such a short time and I am filled with gratitude for our incredible faculty and staff who work tirelessly to ensure the success of our students.


Big things are coming for Danville Community College this year and we can't wait to share the details of many exciting, transformative projects on the horizon. Stay tuned!
