On Wednesday morning, First Lady of Virginia Pamela Northam visited Danville Community College (DCC) as one of the stops on her Teacher Appreciation Tour of the Commonwealth in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week (May 3-7).
During her visit, First Lady Northam learned about the Early Childhood Education program offered at DCC during a short presentation, as well as the partnership between DCC and Averett University to create a pathway for students to attain their associate’s degree from DCC and move on to the bachelor’s degree program at Averett seamlessly.
“I am tremendously appreciative that the First Lady came to DCC to include us in her Teachers Appreciation Tour of the Commonwealth,” said Cornelius Johnson, Ed.D., vice president of academic affairs and student services for DCC. “We understand the importance of early childhood education programs like ours and the role they play in preparing future educators in our community. This event was a fantastic opportunity to highlight the great work taking place at DCC by our Lead Professor Traci Daniel in the Early Childhood Education program.”
First Lady Northam also toured the Helping Hands Childcare Center on the DCC campus and met with the DCC student teachers who are employed there.
“Our students were thrilled to meet with First Lady Northam,” said Traci Daniel, Program Coordinator and Lead Professor for the Early Childhood Education program. “She was so gracious and incredibly interested in the work that our students are doing now, and the work they will be doing in the future as educators.”
