African-American History

  • African American History, Impact, & Culture - Teacher Oz's Kingdom of History.  An outstanding site.  In addition to providing links to numerous general and comprehensive sites on African American history, this site also includes: slavery and the Civil War; the Civil Rights Movement; African Americans in the arts, the military, and sports.  Also has a section on African American cooking and recipes.
  • African American History: Historical Text Archive.  Provides information on the black experience in various states, slave narratives, and texts by writers including Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglas, Malcolm X, and Henry Louis Gates, Jr.   
  • The African American Mosaic Exhibition - The Library of Congress.  This exhibit covers four areas of black history: colonization; abolition; migrations; and the Works Progress Administration.  The WPA generated numerous documents relating to African American history, including written and oral histories, guidebooks, prints, and photographs.    
  • The Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University.  Provides biographical information and a chronology of Dr. King's life.  The "Documents" section contains some of the most frequently requested documents of Dr. King and is still being developed, as is the "Articles" section.  Note: The section which contains The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. requires a one-time registration, which is free.
  • North American Slave Narratives - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries.  This site "documents the individual and collective story of the African American struggle for freedom and human rights in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries." Includes approximately 200 texts.
  • Statutes of the United States Concerning Slavery - The Avalon Project at the Yale Law School.   Provides the text for acts dealing with slavery, beginning in 1794 and ending with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
  • Writing Black.   Literature and history written by and on African Americans.  Provides the texts of writings by the following black authors: Maya Angelou; James Baldwin; W.E.B. DuBois; Marcus Garvey; Langston Hughes; Zora Neale Hurston; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Toni Morrision; Sojourner Truth; Alice Walker; and Malcolm X. Also provides links to additional resources on the web for these writers and to other sites concerned with African American history. 
  • Afro-American History.  Provides links to numerous black history sites.  Contains African American holidays and traditions, including Kwanzaa, Juneteenth, and Johnkankus.   Also provides links to genealogical resources.
