Danville Community College celebrated its 2026 commencement ceremony with pride, reflection, and excitement as 684 graduates marked the completion of their academic journeys, collectively earning 1,017 degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Of those graduates, 416 participated in the ceremony held on May 16, 2026, crossing the stage in celebration of their hard work, dedication, and perseverance.
The ceremony opened with the processional led by Mr. Geoffrey Saur, Director of Appalachian Piping Academy, followed by a performance of the National Anthem by Ry-Honna Crisco (DCC Early College Student), Jake Leigg (DCC Early College Student), Frank Leigg (DCC Early College Student), Alexander Ruiz-Bautista, and Victor Ingram of Danville Public Schools.
Dr. Cornelius Johnson, President of Danville Community College, welcomed graduates, families, faculty, staff, and community supporters to the ceremony.
In his remarks, Dr. Johnson reflected on the determination demonstrated by the Class of 2026 and encouraged graduates to continue pursuing their goals with confidence and purpose.
“This commencement ceremony represented far more than the conferring of degrees and certificates,” said Dr. Johnson. “It celebrated resilience, sacrifice, and the incredible determination of our students. We are proud to recognize the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 and excited to see the impact they will make in our communities and workplaces.”
The commencement address was delivered by Mr. Maurice A. Jones, Senior Vice Chancellor for Strategic Partnerships for Virginia’s Community Colleges. Jones encouraged graduates to embrace lifelong learning, lead with integrity, and remain committed to creating positive change in their communities.
Ms. Ernestine Payne, Chair of the Danville Community College Advisory Board, introduced the commencement speaker and congratulated graduates on reaching this important milestone.
“Graduation is a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished through perseverance and support,” said Payne. “These graduates have worked hard to achieve their goals, and today we celebrate not only their academic success, but also the bright futures that lie ahead for each of them.”
The ceremony also recognized student achievement and academic excellence through several special awards and scholarship presentations.
The Student Government Association Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Mary Motley, Instructor of Developmental Mathematics.
The Stephanie L. Ferguson Medallion of Courage was awarded to Andrew Kenney in recognition of extraordinary perseverance and strength in overcoming adversity.
During the presentation of candidates for graduation, Dr. DeAndre Howard, Vice President of Academic Affairs & Student Services, recognized the accomplishments of the graduating class and the support systems that helped students succeed throughout their educational journeys.
“Our graduates have demonstrated determination, adaptability, and a commitment to achieving their goals,” said Dr. Howard. “Each credential awarded represents countless hours of hard work and perseverance. We are honored to celebrate their success and look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the future.”
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Dr. Johnson formally conferred degrees, diplomas, and certificates as cheers and applause filled the venue. Graduates participated in the Alumni Pledge before recessing as official alumni of Danville Community College.
