Danville Community College (DCC) geology instructor, Dr. Linda Smith, has been selected for the prestigious Virginia Space Grant Master Teacher Program. Linda's acceptance into this program, run by the Virginia Earth System Science Scholars (VESSS), highlights her commitment to advancing educational excellence and leadership in STEM.
Linda Smith will participate as a Master Teacher in the VESSS Online Course Program from November 11, 2024, through April 14, 2025. As part of her role, Linda will guide students through seven comprehensive Earth science modules and a final project. This opportunity not only reflects her academic dedication but also places her among a select group of educators fostering the next generation of STEM leaders.
“I’m honored to be selected for the Virginia Space Grant Master Teacher Program,” said Linda Smith. “I’m looking forward to engaging with students in a meaningful way and helping them deepen their understanding of Earth system science. This is an incredible opportunity to combine my passion for education with cutting-edge STEM initiatives, and I’m eager to contribute.”
The program includes a mandatory virtual training session on November 9, 2024, and successful completion will earn Linda a stipend through the ODU Research Foundation. Her involvement will not only impact students in the online course but could also extend into the 2025 Summer Academy sessions, further enhancing her teaching experience.
Dr. Paul Fox, Dean of Arts, Sciences, and Business at DCC, expressed his enthusiasm for Linda's achievement: “Linda’s passion for education and her leadership skills make her an excellent choice for this program. Her selection reflects the high level of talent and dedication we see in our faculty at DCC, and I am confident she will make a significant impact on the VESSS program and its students.”
The Virginia Space Grant Master Teacher Program is designed to equip educators with innovative tools and strategies to engage students in STEM fields. Linda’s participation will not only enhance her teaching abilities but also inspire students at both the college and K-12 levels to pursue careers in space science and technology.
