Jacob Hancock, of Pittsylvania County, was recognized with the Outstanding Leadership Award and Karl Staten, of Halifax County, earned the Exceptional Tenure Award.

The awards were presented during the annual VCCS Excellence in Coaching Awards meeting by Jennifer Wells, VCCS coordinator for postsecondary pathways and high school career coach program director. There were two recipients from each VCCS College that participates in the High School Career Coach program.

The Outstanding Leadership Award is presented to the coach who has gone above and beyond in helping others to learn and grow in the workplace.

“Jacob has been a high school career coach at DCC for over a year but served at Danville Community College in different capacities before that,” said DCC Director of Enrollment Services Cathy Pulliam. “Jacob’s experience with the enrollment process and advising has proven to be a real asset to the high school students that he serves. Jacob understands and uses the proper processes to enroll students, and on numerous occasions, he has taken the initiative to consult with the DCC Admissions Team to identify areas of improvement.”

The Exceptional Tenure Award goes to the longest serving coach on the team.

“Karl has been a High School Career Coach working in a unique position for five years,” Pulliam said. “He works for two community colleges: Danville Community College and Southside Virginia Community College. Karl has learned the enrollment processes for each college and delivers professional services to the students at Halifax County High School. Keep up the good work, Karl!”
