Danville Community College (DCC) hosted its 2nd Annual ‘CyberKnight Showdown’, a regional cybersecurity competition, on October 6, 2023 on the DCC Campus for local high school students who are pursuing an education in cybersecurity and information technology.
“Cybersecurity is an incredibly important part of doing business in the world we live in today,” said Dr. Jerry Wallace, president of Danville Community College. “The need to protect consumer, business, and government data is ever-growing and the role we play in creating new cybersecurity professionals who can confidently operate in their field cannot be overstated.”
Students from the local high schools gathered in the state-of-the-art DCC Cyber Center located in the Temple Building on the DCC campus to compete in an online, capture-the-flag environment. Competition categories include Open Source Intelligence Gathering (OSINT), Forensic, Web Exploitation, Steganography, Cryptography, Network Traffic Analysis, Reverse Engineering, and Encryption.
“Watching these students, who are still in high school, confidently walk into a competition where the subject matter is incredibly technical and specialized is really amazing,” said Dr. Wallace. “These students are the future of the information systems technology industry.”
After the conclusion of the competition, the winners were announced and recognized in a ceremony held in Oliver Hall, which included 1st, 2nd, 3rd place medals, and a variety of prizes.
