Beginning a college career is a big step and the COVID-19 pandemic has made that step more difficult to achieve for many reasons. As Danville Community College continues to adapt to a more virtual delivery method for classes, they are recognizing the need for more flexibility for students who have been hesitant to take steps to attend college. That’s where ‘Second Chance Semester’ comes in.
Danville Community College will be offering a second wave of 8-week fall classes for students who weren’t ready in August, but would still like to begin college this fall, beginning on October 19.
“We’re pulling out all the stops for our students and our community,” said Dr. Jacqueline Gill Powell, president of DCC. “By offering a second chance to take fall classes, we are reaffirming our commitment to deliver higher education to everyone, regardless of the barriers that COVID-19 has created for our community.”
In conjunction, the Danville Community College Educational Foundation is providing scholarship funding through an investment given by the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County governing boards utilizing their CARES funding. This scholarship funding is for eligible City of Danville and Pittsylvania County residents who graduated in 2019 or 2020 from one of the area’s public high schools and have been impacted by COVID-19.
“This investment demonstrates the commitment our community leaders have to higher education in general, specifically to Danville Community College, and to the residents of our city and county,” said Shannon Hair, vice president of institutional advancement & development for the Danville Community College Educational Foundation. “The ‘Knights to the Rescue’ scholarship program will provide much needed financial support to our local residents who have been impacted by COVID-19.”
