On August 21, 2024, the Danville Community College Educational Foundation (DCCEF) launched a special initiative to support students who go the extra mile—literally—to attend classes at Danville Community College. In celebration of the first day of the fall semester, Dr. Shannon Hair, Vice President of Institutional Advancement & Development and Executive Director of the DCCEF visited every classroom on campus to identify and reward the student in each class who traveled the furthest distance to get to school.
"In addition to our faculty and staff, our students are the most important resource on our campus," said Dr. Shannon Hair, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of DCCEF. "The students attending Danville Community College are the future of our community. Being able to thank our students for choosing DCC and recognizing those who drive the farthest will be a new tradition by the DCC Educational Foundation during each fall and spring semester. I am also thankful for the partnership with Sheetz and the DCC Bookstore which helped make this effort a success."
Each of these dedicated students received a Sheetz gas card and a DCC t-shirt, a small token of appreciation for their commitment to attending DCC for their education. The initiative reflects the DCCEF’s ongoing efforts to support students in practical ways, acknowledging the additional challenges faced by those who commute long distances.
“Danville Community College is proud of its diverse student body, many of whom come from across the region to pursue their educational goals,” said Dr. Jerry Wallace, President of Danville Community College “This initiative hosted by the DCCEF is a wonderful way of recognizing and supporting the hard work and dedication of those who make significant efforts to be here.”
The DCC Educational Foundation has long been committed to enhancing the student experience at Danville Community College through scholarships, program support, and other forms of assistance. The distribution of Sheetz gas cards is just one of the many ways the DCCEF seeks to ease the financial burden on students and encourage their continued success.
Students and faculty alike appreciated the gesture, with many expressing gratitude for the Educational Foundation’s support. As the fall semester kicks off, the DCC Educational Foundation looks forward to continuing its mission of making a positive impact on the lives of DCC students.
