Danville Community College (DCC) Public Relations and Marketing Specialist Bobby Allen Roach was recognized today for excellence in public relations and marketing during a virtual awards ceremony for District 2 of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR).
Roach, 31, received the 2020 Rising Star Award for District 2. The Rising Star Award recognizes communications professionals who have demonstrated special creativity or ability in marketing and PR and show evidence of a promising future in the field. It is awarded annually in each of NCMPR’s seven districts, and district winners automatically qualify for consideration for the national award, which will be presented in early 2021.
District 2 is comprised of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, and The Bahamas.
NCMPR previously honored Roach for his extraordinary commitment to amplifying Danville Community College’s voice with the Gold Medallion for Original Photography, Gold and Silver Medallions for Print Advertising, and Silver Medallion for Logo Design awards between 2017 and 2019.
“I am deeply humbled by the recognition of receiving this award. We are doing tremendous things at DCC, and I am so proud to serve my community in Southern Virginia in my role at the College,” Roach explained. “Each day, I have grown more certain of my decision to pursue a career in marketing and PR. I hope to continue honoring that realization and the people around me who have supported me as we advance the lives of those we serve and innovate to equip ourselves and others to face the unique challenges presented as virtually every industry is evolving at an unprecedented speed.”
DCC Director of Public Relations and Marketing Faith O'Neil nominated Roach for the Rising Star Award.
“Excellence is an attribute we strive for across all areas of Danville Community College,” O’Neil said. “I am incredibly proud of Bobby’s commitment to excellence and the recognition he has received by being selected as the recipient of the NCMPR Rising Star Award for 2020.”
DCC also won awards for writing, video, and website design. The College brought home the Bronze Medallion for Excellence in Writing, the Bronze Medallion for Website, and the Gold Medallion for Video Shorts – Single categories.
“I constantly push myself to learn new things, whether they are practical skills I can immediately apply to my work or concepts and ideas that help me to be a more conscientious member of this all-star team,” Roach said. “It's not hard to find motivation when you work with such a dynamic and caring team. I am especially thankful to Faith O'Neil, who models daily the characteristics that make a strong leader, not the least of which are trust, humanity, and willingness to listen. She is proof that an effective leader drives productivity through inspiration and authentic kindness. I am learning a lot from her, and I am grateful for that opportunity.”
DCC partially reopened on July 1, with certain hands-on classes, such as those in the welding and nursing programs, returning to in-person lab experiences. All other classes continue to be offered online alongside a robust assortment of services to enable student success and remove barriers to academic and professional achievement.
Spring 2021 course registration begins on November 2, and applications are accepted year-round at danville.edu/apply.
