Accommodations & Services

What services are available? 

The accommodation available to you will depend on the nature of your disability and will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the ADA Coordinator. Accommodations include but are not limited to: 

  • Alternative Testing 

  • Assistive Technology 

  • Counseling 

  • Interpreter Services 

  • Note-taking Assistance 

  • Tutoring 

  • Preferential Seating 

  • Taped Lectures  

Handicapped parking spaces are available at each building on campus. Students must have a handicapped license plate or handicapped parking permit issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to park in a handicapped parking space. 

Assistive Technology 

DCC strives to assist in the enhancement of student outcomes through provision of information, training, and technical support in the area of Assistive Technology. 

There is an accessible computer workstation in the Learning Resource Center.  Students with disabilities are welcomed to use the computer workstation, which provides a number of special assistive technology programs to assist students.

    Designed for students who want to see objects at a distance as well as at their desktop.  Switch between near, intermediate and distant viewingIt will magnify from 2X to 50X, and has a remote control, similar to a TV remote, for making adjustments while simultaneously viewingReading and writing are easy in the near-view mode, while lectures and classroom activities, such as written matter on a chalkboard, can be viewed in the distance mode

  • Copy Stands

  • Kurzweil 3000

    Kurzweil 3000 for Windows provides the most comprehensive suite of supports for struggling students, including reading, writing, study skills, and test takingKey features:  Text-to-speech in several languages, Reads any digital text aloud, including the Internet, Multiple reference sources, including bi-lingual, Translation to any Google supported language, Highlighters and sticky notes, Vocabulary study guides, Graphic organizer, Writing templates, Word prediction and Talking spell checker. 

  • ZoomText Magnifier/Reader

    Combining the revolutionary new features of ZoomText Magnifier with a powerful set of reading tools, ZoomText Magnifier/Reader gives the student the total computer access solution.  See and hear what you’re doing in all of your applications, and give your eyes a rest while ZoomText reads your documents, web pages and email – right through your computer’s speakers. 

  • WIZCOM ReadingPen TS

    Displays up to 5 lines of text on a high resolution touch-screen; large display of scanned line; Reads words, lines or paragraphs aloud; Spells-out the scanned word, letter by letter; Provides direct look-up of idioms/phrases; Provides audio word pronunciation (American pronunciation) built-in speaker or earphones; Recognition of a wide range of standard printed font types and inverted text on contrasting backgrounds (except red on white and blue). 

  • Audio Recorders

    The Accessibility Services Office has a limited number of tape recorders that may be checked out for a limited timeStudents are responsible for providing their own tapes and, if needed, batteriesStudents must check the tape recorder out from the Accessibility Services Office.
