Students having reason to believe that previous educational studies, training programs, or work experience may entitle them to an adjustment in the required courses in a particular curriculum should contact the Division Deans or Advisors at the college to determine procedures before registering for classes. Through subsequent interviews and tests, students may qualify for waiver of curriculum admission requirements, of course prerequisites, and of courses in a curriculum upon the recommendations of the faculty and the instructional division concerned.
Students may substitute equivalent or more sophisticated courses in the same field in any approved curriculum with the approval of the instructional division and the Chief Academic Officer or designee provided they can, by previous educational accomplishment or college administered examination, demonstrate the capability for success in the courses requested.
In addition, if students can demonstrate that previous educational study, training, work experience, or college administered examination results may entitle them to advancement in the courses required for a particular curriculum, upon request and with the approval of the instructional division and the Chief Academic Officer or designee, they may receive advance placement and credit in the course or curriculum for which advancement was requested.
If requirements are waived, students must successfully complete other courses to compensate for the credit hours.
Waiver of Credits
Credits waived are those normally required course credits for a particular program which are administratively exempted. Credits waived require election of additional credit courses to compensate for the credits waived.
Physical Education Requirement for Veterans
In accordance with VCCS Policy 5.6.5.1.e, the physical education requirements for the degree, diploma and certificate programs may be waived for veterans, and the college may grant up to 3 credits of physical education/health credits for basic military training to satisfy the physical education/health credit requirement of the veterans’ curricula.
Substitution of requirements for students with documented disabilities, covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and § 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended VCCS 5.6.5.0.1.
Otherwise qualified students with documented disabilities who are, by reason of their disability, unable to complete a requirement of the program pursued by the student, with or without reasonable accommodations, may request an approved course substitution. Substitutions will generally not be granted for any course that is deemed essential to the program of instruction being pursued by such student, or to any directly related licensing requirement. If requirements are waived, students must successfully complete other courses to compensate for the credit hours.
Credit for Prior Learning
Credit for Prior Learning is the administrative awarding of academic credit to students for subject matter competency acquired through previous academic study, nonacademic study, work experience or other nontraditional means.
The College may award academic credit for demonstrated student learning acquired through many means, to include but not limited to the following:
-
Equivalent coursework satisfactorily completed at a postsecondary institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and verified through receipt of an official transcript.
-
Courses taken at the secondary level shall not be accepted under this policy. Skills acquired through high school experiences may be awarded credit through one of the methods listed below.
-
Satisfactory scores on locally-developed, comprehensive challenge examination developed and evaluated by college faculty.
-
Satisfactory scores on nationally recognized standardized examinations or college-approved external examinations. External examinations used for this purpose include but are not limited to the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST) of the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DANTES), Excelsior Credit by Exam (ECE), the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB), Advanced Placement (AP) program, Cambridge Advanced (A/AS) examinations, the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, and the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT).
Upon receipt of official test scores, as required by Virginia Code and the Virginia Public Higher Education Policy on Course Credit for AP, Cambridge, CLEP and IB, all Virginia community colleges shall accept a score of three (3) and higher for Advanced Placement (AP) courses, a score of four (4) or higher for higher level International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, a score of five (5) or higher for standard level International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, a score of fifty (50) or higher on CLEP courses, and scores of E or better for Cambridge Advanced (A/AS) examinations when the equivalent course is offered by the college. -
Occupational experience or training determined by faculty or a college-approved learning assessment service or process that student learning is at least equivalent to the course(s) in which academic credit is awarded. As applicable, when student training or an earned certification or licensure has been evaluated by sources such as the American Council on Education (ACE), the National College Credit Recommendation Service, or another college-approved organization, these evaluations may guide faculty recommendations.
-
Military education, experience, training and credentials gained from service in the armed forces of the United States recommended for academic credit by a national higher education association that provides academic credit recommendations when documented on a student’s military transcript issued by any of the armed forces of the United States.

CLEP (College Level Examination Program)
CLEP is a national program of credit-by-examination that offers students the opportunity to obtain college credit for prior academic achievement. DCC accepts most of the CLEP offered exams, and uses the American Council on Education recommended minimum score of 50 for awarding CLEP credit. An official copy of the CLEP transcript must be submitted to the DCC Enrollment Services Office in order to obtain credit. Unofficial or student copies of transcripts will not be accepted for credit.
CLEP examinations are not offered through DCC.
Obtaining CLEP Transcripts
If you did not indicate the recipient institution at the time of the CLEP exam and you want to request your CLEP scores, you can do so by ordering an official transcript via the official CLEP web site. The transcript is a cumulative score report of all the CLEP exams the student has taken and the scores earned in the last 20 years. Simply download the Transcript Request Form and mail the completed form with the required payment to CLEP to the address on the form. You may also call (800) 257-9558 if ordering with a credit card. Please provide your name (at testing time), date of birth, social security number, exam title(s), test date, testing location/center, and where you want your scores to be sent.
Once received, credit may be awarded in the following commonly taken disciplines. Other CLEP subjects will be considered on a case by case basis.

Attn: Transcript Officer
Note the following before sending in your request:
- Transcripts may be ordered by mail only; transcript requests received by fax or e-mail cannot be processed as a signature is required to release results
- Complete ONE transcript request form PER INSTITUTION that you wish to send your results to.
- Submit one payment per transcript request form regardless of how many years you took exams or how many subjects were taken (however the expedited service is a separate payment - see below) .
- Do not send your diploma document with your transcript request form.
- All transcripts sent to students are considered "unofficial" by universities and will be labeled as unofficial transcripts. It is recommended that students have their official results sent directly to the universities they wish to apply to.
Cost
(1) Students may request transcripts FREE of charge for up to three universities. (ONE US institution and TWO Canadian institutions OR THREE Canadian institutions in total.)
Requests must be post-marked by 5 July (for the May exam session) or by 15 March (for the November exam session).
(2) After the deadline OR for additional transcripts, the cost is $15 USD or $17 CAD per transcript request*. The cost is per institution, NOT per year of examination or per subject. Please include a check or money order made payable to "International Baccalaureate Organization".
Please do not send duplicate payments or transcript forms unless requested by an IB staff member. We are unable to identify duplicate payments and there may be a delay in arranging a refund.
(3) Expedited (courier) service:
· Transcript requests must be received with an additional payment of USD/CAD $35* (for US institutions) or USD/CAD $40* (for Canadian institutions) for courier service to your university, providing the university is NOT on the electronic transcripts list. We do not expedite requests to universities on the electronic transcripts list because results are available immediately from a secure website, rather than being sent by post or courier.
· Please provide a separate check or money order if expedited courier service is required.
· Students who took exams in May 2004 or earlier will NOT be able to have their transcripts/results sent electronically, and we suggest that students who need transcripts urgently use the expedited service.

Credit for Military Training
A student's military training, courses, and occupational specialty can all be considered for college credit. As a participating member of Service members Opportunity Colleges (SOC), Danville Community College follows the American Council on Education's (ACE) Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services in determining the value of learning acquired in military service when applicable to the service member’s program of study. Military service credit in the occupational/technical areas (i.e., Engineering, Health Technology) may require approval by the appropriate division dean prior to award.
In order to receive credit for your military training, the student must submit a military transcript which includes the ACE recommended credit, and initiate a request for evaluation to the DCC Enrollment Services Office. Note: If the student submits only the DD214 and no military transcript, only credit for HLT/PED elective will be awarded. Students who have completed basic training, regardless of the date of military experience, may receive credit for HLT/PED elective.
Each branch of the service has its own transcript request service.
Depending on the branch in which you served, a transcript can be requested from the following agencies:

Previous Completion Credit (Experiential Learning/Work Experience Credit)
Students wishing to be awarded previous completion credit for a specific course should contact the appropriate division office in which the course is taught (i.e., a request for credit for Keyboarding must be submitted to the Arts, Sciences, and Business division.)
Danville Community College reserves the right to place a time limit on prior learning experiences for which advanced standing may be granted. The college has a time limit for accepting credit for technical courses taken previously at DCC or other institutions. The Division Dean, in consultation with the Registrar, will determine if courses taken more than five years previously can be used in your current program of study.
Administration of Credit for Prior Learning
-
The determination of such credit must be made by qualified faculty members at the institution or according to procedures and standards approved by qualified faculty ensuring that assessment procedures are appropriate for the credit awarded.
-
If documentation and interviews are used in lieu of examinations, the institution must demonstrate that these methods provide assurances of academic comparability to credit earned by traditional means.
-
At least 25 percent of the credit hours required for an undergraduate degree are earned through credit instruction offered by the institution awarding the degree.
-
In awarding credit for prior learning, the institution must:
-
award credit only for documented learning that aligns the prior experience to course learning outcomes;
-
award credit only to matriculated students;
-
identify such credit on the student’s transcript as credit for prior learning;
-
adopt, describe in appropriate institutional publications, implement and regularly review policies and procedures for awarding credit for prior learning;
-
clearly describe and establish the validity of the evaluation process and criteria for awarding credit for prior learning;
-
designate a staff member or office responsible for the application of Credit for Prior Learning to student records and student records shall reflect Credit for Prior Learning and the applicable source (s) of that credit;
-
clearly post to current and prospective students, faculty, staff and administrators Credit for Prior Learning guidelines, policies, and procedures; and
-
include in college publications a statement that the college cannot guarantee the acceptance of Credit for Prior Learning by other institutions to which the student may transfer.
-
